The Past
Devon Counselling College was established in 2006 by Jenny Jackson and Julie Wyman. Over the years, it has grown, evolved, moved premises, and rooted itself as a well-established and much-respected counselling college.
Julie remembers the early days fondly…
“As our new team begin to implement the necessary changes to shape and secure the future of Devon Counselling College, my mind drifts back to the time of the college’s conception, when myself and Jenny Jackson would huddle together over the kitchen table excitedly developing the plans that would eventually result in our college. I can still picture being surrounded by dozens of notes and bits of paper, full of our ideas and dreams, passions and purpose that we wanted to infuse into each and every facet of the unique learning experience we were so keen to provide for our students.”
The early days of Devon Counselling College began at Newton Abbot Maltings, at that time the home of the Youth Enquiry Service (YES) and Young Devon. In 2015 we moved to our current premises situated on Oak Place.
The Present
Moving forward several years, we are delighted that Devon Counselling College has achieved an excellent reputation and many confirmations that our training results in committed, effective counsellors. We receive constant feedback showing that our students value a positive learning experience derived from the healthy, caring relationships between tutors and students that make this possible. We aim to provide a secure, caring, yet firmly held environment that offers our students the opportunity to explore, experiment, and discover who they are as they begin their journey as counselling practitioners.
Although some faces have changed over the years, the team have retained their initial passion for your learning experience; quite the opposite. In fact, we have been busy nurturing and developing it in readiness to pass it on to you!
The Future
In 2022 significant changes happened at Devon Counselling College. After 16 years at the helm, Julie Wyman has stepped back for some well-deserved rest and time for herself, handing the reins to Jane and James Schindler-Ord, two local, well respected and experienced psychotherapists and tutors, who have an absolute love for Devon Counselling College. They respect the hard work that Julie has done over the years to build an excellent college and plan to carry on the good name of the college. We are also delighted that Julie will continue working with us at Devon Counselling College as a fellow tutor.
Whilst we carry on providing core counselling training in the form of Skills and Education Group Levels 2, 3 and 4 courses, we also now offer post-graduate training in several areas (see our courses page for more information). We have other exciting plans in the pipeline too! Our love for building relationships, nurturing creativity, and encouraging individuality are all part of who we are and are important to where we are going with Devon Counselling College’s future.
Choosing Devon Counselling College
We are keen that we want you to make the best decision for yourself as you choose your training provider, and with this in mind, we offer you the opportunity to visit DCC, meet members of the team and perhaps speak with other students to get a feel for how we do things from that perspective. This could be via a taster session, a visit to the college or even a zoom call if that’s more convenient for you.
