Diploma in Working Therapeutically with Young People 2019 - Jane & James Schindler-Ord

This is a course where you will learn to work therapeutically, effectively and safely with young people. You will gain the confidence to help a young person to express themselves and tell their story whilst understanding and employing a variety of interventions. You will also reflect on your own adolescence and how this may affect your role as a young person's counsellor.

Starting with a foundation of understanding the development of the young person along with attachment patterns, you will be able to gain an understanding of the individual young person and tailor the therapy to suit their needs. You will encourage the young person to feel safe enough to have those important conversations, and empower them to explore how they can make the changes they may need to make. You will study the impact that the systems around the young person can have on them, this includes looking at the role of the family, school, their culture and the community that they live in. Exploring the practicalities of counselling young people, such as contracting, initial sessions as well as safeguarding, is balanced with developing therapeutic techniques and creative ways of working, thus offering an experience of therapy that can positively impact on the young person’s life.

This course is designed for qualified counsellors or those who have trained in counselling skills and theory to Level 3 or equivalent, who are either already working with young people between the ages of 11 to 18, or who wish to expand their horizons further to work with this age group. If you are unsure if you meet the criteria, please feel free to ask.

The assessment for this course will be based on passing the assignments and presentation and completing a comprehensive learning journal. Successful graduates will be awarded with a Devon Counselling College Diploma in Working with Young People.

Jane and James Schindler-Ord, who have a wealth of knowledge and experience in working with young people will be the key facilitators on this Diploma. Jane is a psychotherapist who has written and delivered courses and workshops in this area for many years alongside managing a counselling and mental health service for the Children's Society in Torbay. James worked with Young Devon for several years where he was responsible for assessments as well as providing therapeutic interventions for young people. Both facilitators work with Young People in Private Practice and are registered members of the BACP; as such their training approach demonstrates a deep respect for ethical values and principles as well as Carl Rogers' important core conditions.
